McKenzie Towne

Calgary's best-known new urbanist community, built around a walkable High Street.

Profile

About McKenzie Towne

McKenzie Towne is a Brookfield Residential community in south-east Calgary, developed from the mid-1990s as the city's most committed attempt at new urbanist planning. It is organised into named villages around High Street, a genuine walkable main street with shops, restaurants and offices.

The design choices are visible everywhere: front porches close to the sidewalk, garages on rear lanes, narrow streets, a village hall and a strong architectural code. Buyers either love it or find it constraining, and there is not much middle ground.

The community is fully built out. It earns a place on a new build site because the walkable-core idea it pioneered is what Seton and Alpine Park are now attempting at larger scale, and comparing them is genuinely useful.

Commute note: Approximate drive to downtown Calgary via Deerfoot Trail or 52 Street SE. Off-peak roughly 24 minutes, peak roughly 30 minutes.

Considerations

Fit

Who McKenzie Towne suits

A good fit if

  • Buyers who want a genuine walkable main street rather than a strip mall.
  • People who like front-porch streets and will accept strict architectural rules.
  • Anyone testing whether the walkable-core idea suits them before buying into Seton or Alpine Park.

Look elsewhere if

  • If you want a wide lot, a big driveway and few rules, this plan is the opposite of that.
  • If you want new construction, Seton and Alpine Park apply the same ideas in newer communities.

    FAQ

    Questions about McKenzie Towne

New urbanism plans neighbourhoods around walkability: a real main street, front porches near the sidewalk, garages on rear lanes and narrow, tree-lined streets. In practice it means shorter walks to shops and a stronger street life, traded against tighter lots, less parking and stricter architectural rules. McKenzie Towne is Calgary's clearest example; Seton and Alpine Park apply similar ideas at larger scale.
