School planning is crucial when buying in a new community. Many new developments don't have schools built yet, requiring bus transportation or temporary arrangements.
Calgary's School Systems
Calgary Board of Education (CBE)
- Students: ~130,000
- Schools: 250+
- Programs: French Immersion, Spanish Bilingual, Traditional Learning
- Cost: Free (fees for transportation)
Calgary Catholic (CCSD)
- Students: ~60,000
- Schools: 118
- Programs: French Immersion, Fine Arts, STEM
- Note: Catholic baptism not required
Charter Schools
FFCA (Foundations for the Future)
Direct instruction, back-to-basics. Often has waitlists.
Calgary Arts Academy
Arts-integrated learning K-9.
Calgary Girls' School
All-girls education, Grades 4-9, STEM focus.
New Community Considerations
- Schools may not exist yet. New communities often wait 5-10+ years.
- Busing is common. Children may travel 20-30+ minutes.
- School sites reserved, not guaranteed. Land allocation doesn't mean construction.
- Programs vary. French Immersion may not be available locally.
