Profile

About Strathmore

Strathmore is a town of roughly fourteen thousand in Wheatland County, about forty kilometres east of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway. It sits in irrigation country, and the canals and reservoirs that shaped the agriculture around it also give the town an unusual amount of water and green space for the prairie.

New home construction is steady rather than dramatic, spread across several communities on the town’s edges. Edgefield, developed by Genesis Land Development, is the most active of the current master plans, and the town also carries older phases with laned and front-drive product. Entry prices are generally the lowest of any established town in the Calgary commuter belt.

The trade is the commute and the direction. Strathmore points east, away from the mountains, so weekend trips run the opposite way from most of the region. For anyone working in east Calgary, the airport area or the industrial corridor along Highway 1, it is one of the shortest commutes of any town outside the city.

Commute note: Approximate drive to downtown Calgary via the Trans-Canada Highway and Stoney or Deerfoot Trail. East Calgary and the airport area are considerably closer. Off-peak roughly 35 minutes, peak roughly 45 minutes.

Highlights

  • Generally the lowest entry prices of the established Calgary commuter towns.
  • Straight Trans-Canada Highway run into east Calgary with no city crossing.
  • Irrigation canals, lakes and green space unusual for a prairie town.

Considerations

  • Points east, so mountain trips add the width of Calgary to the drive.
  • No transit connection to Calgary; this is a car commute in all weather.
  • Schools are Golden Hills School Division and Christ the Redeemer, not the Calgary boards.
  • Wheatland County taxes and utility rates differ from Calgary; compare the full monthly cost.

FAQ

Questions about Strathmore

Yes, generally by a wide margin for equivalent square footage, and it is usually the least expensive of the established commuter towns around Calgary. Compare the total monthly cost rather than the purchase price, because Wheatland County and town rates for property tax and utilities differ from Calgary and the commute adds fuel and vehicle cost.
